Strong programs can be found at four-year universities, two-year community colleges, and technical schools. University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, MO
The University of Central Missouri is a public institution that U.S. News World Report ranked 86th among regional universities in the Midwest for 2017. Undergraduates can pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer-aided drafting and designing. Once enrolled, students work with current and evolving pieces of CAD technology as they construct 2-D and 3-D drawings of buildings and tools. Areas of specialization include architectural or mechanical drafting, civil drafting and geographic information systems (GIS), management and support, CAD/CAM or computer graphics. Graduates can earn a professional certification from the American Design Drafting Association by passing an exam.
Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, MI
Eastern Michigan University is a public institution that was named a best Midwestern school by the Princeton Review in 2017. At the university’s College of Technology, students can earn a bachelor’s degree in CAD while learning how to work with major CAD applications. They’ll also find out to create 2-D and 3-D modeling and surfacing for structural drawings, become familiar with product data management and investigate applied mechanics.

In 2017, Ferris State University ranked as the 74th-best regional university in the Midwest by U.S. News World Report. The university offers an associate’s degree in CADD and tool design. The curriculum is build around the use of CADD in fixture and gauge design, product drawing and molds for plastic processes. Students will primarily work with CAD software as they design molds and mechanical applications. In the final year of the program, students usually create a portfolio.

At the College of Southern Nevada, students can pursue a CAD technology certificate. Students build their skills in drawing and drafting and they also gain experience with standard office procedures and production techniques. In addition, they must complete ethics training; upon completion, graduates have sufficient preparation for jobs as CAD technicians.
