Testimonials

We had a great stay with Rita and Johny at their guest house. The room we had was more like an appartment with lots of space. The room and the rest of the buildings are being kept very authentic which gives a nice atmosphere. We enjoyed breakfast and diner at the guesthouse and it felt as if we were visiting friends since both Rita and Johny joined us at the table every time. This gave a very friendly and relaxed feeling! The food itself was amazing – from the handmade bread and marmelade in the morning until the awesome dishes in the evening. Rita is a genius in the kitchen and Johny knows how to pick the right wines.

Weeks after our return from Italy my mind keeps returning to Tuscany. Recently we spent a week there with our family. Because the property was so pleasant and the hospitality of our hosts, Rita and Johnny, was so gracious and generous, we found it hard to gather up the will to go explore the beauty of this historic region. Rita provides a magnificent breakfast every morning, along with a tarte to which the guests may help themselves during the day. With drinks, fruit, and cookies available all day, and magnificent meals upon request, our every need and want was instantly met.

We stayed 3 nights at this absolutely charming rural B+B. Run by Rita and Johnny (from Belgium) it was superb. They are friendly and charming hosts. The rooms are rustic chic, very spacious and the bathrooms are well equipped. The beds are extremely comfortable and the linen luxurious! We were welcomed with a glass of Prosecco and the 3 course meal we had on the evening of arrival was absolutely fabulous. Rita is a amazing chef! She makes her own bread for breakfasts (which are also excellent) and there’s always a new cake on the table to help yourself during the day – coffee and fruit as well.

Decorating 101 – Interior Design Basics

Tuscan interior design

Learn the basics of home decorating, including design principles, decorating styles, and answers to decorating challenges.

What Is Interior Design Compared with Interior Decorating?

Interior design and interior decorating are often mistaken for being the same thing, but the terms are not completely interchangeable. Interior design is a profession that requires specific schooling and formal training including space planning, furniture design, and architecture.

An interior decorator does not have that formal training and focuses on the aesthetics and the surface appearance of a space. Who you would hire depends on whether you have any structural work or space planning to be done or you need someone to plan the decor only. See more about the differences between interior design and interior decorating.

Elements of Decor

Your first step should be to select a style for your home interior. This will promote the design principle of unity and harmony, thinking of the entire home with a unifying theme. It can be as simple as choosing casual instead of formal, traditional instead of contemporary. From there, you can refine it to a more specific style, such as French country, Tuscan, modern Victorian, or shabby chic.

Balance is another principle, distributing the visual weight in a room. You can do it symmetrically, as is common in traditional interiors, or with asymmetrical balance as seen in casual interiors.

Within each room, there should be a focal point. In a living room, it could be the fireplace or a piece of art. It sets itself apart by scale, color, or texture.

Contrast and variety add visual interest to a room. Keep rhythm in mind with repeating elements of the same color, texture, or pattern, and a progression of sizes or colors.

Choosing a color palette is an essential part of interior design. While you could have a different style and color scheme in each room, often you will want to tie the whole dwelling together. You ll want to consider the right colors for a small room as well as the right colors and patterns for a large room.

Patterns

Mixing patterns in home decor is one of the more advanced parts of interior design. Patterns don t have to match, but they need to complement and coordinate with each other. This is done by considering color, size, and scale. Learn pattern-mixing rules so you can do it right.

Tips to Get Started Right with Your Decor

Decorating do s and don ts can be fun to browse so you avoid common mistakes for each room and get started down the right path.

Now you are ready to concentrate on the room or rooms you need to decorate. From the entry to the family room and the kitchen to the home office, you ll find decorating help for every room in your home. Explore the basics of setting up a room and the finishing touches to make your space a reflection of your personality and good taste.

Furnishings are a key part of decorating, but they can also be and investment and a large part of the budget.

PRAISE

It has been a pleasure to work with Meredith on multiple projects in my home. She most recently designed my master bedroom suite. Meredith took the time to understand my desires for the space. She is great at giving multiple options that will work which makes the process collaborative. I have been delighted by her creativity. She thinks of things that I would never have thought of, but turn out to be just right. One example of this is the way that she adds architectural elements to her designs. Another example is the way that she mixes different finishes, metals, fabrics, etc. so that the room takes on a curated look. She does all of this, but still managed to make the project reflective of my taste. Meredith is very talented, but what also sets her apart is her kindness, responsiveness and the enthusiasm that she brings to the process. I would highly recommend Meredith for your next design project! — North Potomac, MD.

We contacted Meredith at Tuscan Blue Design after wrestling with how to update and open up the kitchen, breakfast room and butler’s pantry space in our 1895 Queen Anne home. Meredith immediately came in with fresh ideas that solved the difficulties we had encountered, and our project took off. We are thrilled with the space and must credit Meredith throughout, as she helped us finalize the floor plan, select all the elements of the kitchen cabinets, tile, and understood our interest in paying homage to the home by her attention to finishing details. The furnishings she recommended finished the space beautifully. As the project moved on, we enlisted Meredith’s help in updating two bathrooms and freshening the furnishings in our living areas. She was very responsive to our desires to work with some existing pieces and clearly enjoys the challenge. The overall result reflects our eclectic taste for a comfortable living space that feels very welcoming to our guests. — Frederick, MD

Tuscan Interior Design

Characteristics

Tuscan interior design draws its inspirations from old rustic villages in Italy. Tuscan interiors feature a rustic, sun-baked look characterized by stone patios; sturdy furnishings with elegant iron accents; terra-cotta tiles; textured wall finishes; elegant, detailed murals and trompe l oeil designs.

  • Colors: The rustic Tuscan interior design color palette leans heavily on earthy, unpretentious hues evocative of a Tuscan hillside.
  • Floors: Terra-cotta tiles, stone with mosaic inlay and worn wood covered with antique rugs are ways to bring a Tuscan look down to the floor.
  • Accents: Wrought-iron accessories such as candle sconces and light fixtures can reinforce the rustic theme. Other appropriate accessories include painted ceramic objects and tile to bring color and vitality to the design.
  • Architecture: Rough plaster walls often meet a rustic beamed ceiling. Windows are simple and left bare to take advantage of unfiltered natural light in Tuscan interior design.
