Interior Design Programs and Courses

Interior Design Associate’s Degree

Offered by a few colleges, this entry-level online program covers areas like residential and commercial design, drawing techniques, use of computer-aided design software, and legal, financial, ethical and other issues encountered by interior designers. Students will be expected to take some general education requirements. Coursework for the 2-year degree program includes:

Interior Design Certification

In order to become a certified interior designer through the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ), prospective interior designers must complete a formal program in interior design with a minimum of 40 semester hours of interior-design-related coursework, submit proof of work experience with an interior design firm and pass the 3-part Interior Design Fundamentals Exam administered by the NCIDQ. An exception is made for those with a Bachelor of Architecture or Master of Architecture, who do not need additional interior design education to take the exam.

    Schools are warning parents that a new location-sharing feature in Snapchat could put children at risk.

    Snap Map lets users share their exact location with people on their “friends” list in real time.

    In a letter seen by the BBC, one school said the map raised “serious safeguarding concerns” because children could be tracked on the map.

    But Snap, the company behind Snapchat, says the feature is opt-in and can be switched off at any time.

    What is Snap Map?

    Snap Map was launched on 21 June and lets people browse a map of photos and videos that have been shared publicly.

    It also lets people share their exact location with those they have added as “friends” in the app.

    Users who are sharing their location appear on the map as a cartoon avatar.

    What are the concerns?

    Some schools have criticised the accuracy of the location-sharing feature, with one warning that it could be used to “build up a picture of home addresses, travel routes, schools and workplaces”.

    While location information is shared only with people on your “friends” list, that could include people you do not actually know, such as friends met on other apps and websites.

    Others have criticised the way the map was added to Snapchat without a detailed announcement explaining exactly how it worked.

    “We know tech companies are constantly developing their platforms and we’d encourage them to provide signposted information for parents and young people, so they know how to keep themselves safe,” said Rose Bray from the NSPCC.

    “Parents could be given a bit of warning, so they can look up the information before the new feature launches, and have a conversation with their child.”

    One mother, Paula, told BBC Breakfast she was surprised to find her 11-year-old son had opted in to share his location.

    “I didn’t know anything about it,” she said. “Somebody had told him about it, one of his friends at school.

    “I was a little bit worried about the fact that you could be pinpointed. Obviously there are predators, there are bullies.”

    Paula said she had discussed the feature with her son and they had agreed he would enable “ghost mode” to disappear from the map.

    What does Snapchat say?

    In a statement, Snap said: “The safety of our community is very important to us and we want to make sure that all Snapchatters, parents and educators have accurate information about how the Snap Map works.”

    The company stressed that location sharing on Snap Map was off by default, was an opt-in feature and could be switched off at any time.

    It told the BBC that the feature had to be accurate so that friends could use it to find one another and meet up.

    It added that “the majority of interactions on Snapchat take place between close friends”, unlike some social networks that are designed for people to discover and follow new friends.

    However, when asked by the BBC why it had not warned users that the map was about to be launched, the company did not comment.

    The National Crime Agency’s Child Exploitation and Online Protection command (Ceop) has published guidance for parents who want to know more about Snapchat and Snap Map.

    It says parents should encourage children to share their location only in private messaging apps with people they know.

    A significant number of Welsh schools will still need replacing or majorly refurbishing by 2019, the Auditor General for Wales has said.

    Huw Vaughan-Thomas’s report said the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools programme was a step forward from patching-up buildings.

    But he added some of the new buildings were not meeting standards.

    Education Secretary Kirsty Williams said thousands of pupils had benefited from the programme.

    The Welsh Government, councils and further education institutions are collectively spending about £1.5bn on the first phase of the programme, which began in 2014 and aims improve the condition and sustainability of schools.

    But the report said there will still be a significant number of schools in need of replacement or major refurbishment when this ends in 2019.

    It added the programme was being managed “generally well” – but improvements are needed.

    Mr Vaughan-Thomas highlighted gaps where the Welsh Government was “not clear” in setting out its expectations from the start, or in setting out in detail the wider benefits it hoped to achieve.

    There were also concerns some of the new buildings are not achieving the high environmental standards expected.

    The report says out of the 169 planned projects, 132 schools and six further education projects have so far received formal Welsh Government approval and, of those, 59 have been completed.

    A few projects were said to have gone over budget.

    Recommendations in the report include developing an up-to-date picture of the condition of school buildings for the next band of investment.

    Mr Vaughan-Thomas said the programme has “improved greatly on the previous approach to capital investment in our schools”.

    “As the Welsh Government finalises its plans for the next phase of investment, from 2019 onwards, there is a need to focus now on some key areas such as managing the risks of a new type of funding and ensuring that the good collaborative working between Welsh Government and local government continues,” he said.

    Ms Williams said the Welsh Government had worked “very successfully with partners to achieve the best value for their joint investment” and pupils had benefited along with many local construction companies.

    She added: “I place a huge emphasis on pupils being given an opportunity to thrive in the very best, modern learning environment and am committed to delivering plenty more high quality, well designed, sustainable schools and colleges across Wales.”

    NUT Wales policy officer Owen Hathway said a significant amount was being invested by 21st Century Schools but ultimately it was not enough and was below the amount needed.

    “Ultimately, it falls short and it falls short at a time when school finding is stretched to breaking point,” he said.

    He said there was a “patchy experience” across Wales with brand new schools and refurbishments but there were also schools “in dilapidation and teachers struggling to work in classes which were fit for purpose”.

    Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, Nick Ramsay, said: “I am pleased to see the Auditor General’s findings that the Welsh Government has so far managed this large programme well and that it seems to be on track to deliver the improvements to school buildings anticipated from the first wave of investment.

    “However, there is clearly more to do to address the overall condition and suitability of many schools in Wales, at a time when public funds are under continued pressure.”

    More than a decade ago, auditors estimated the school maintenance backlog in Wales was £1.6bn.

    The 21st Century schools and education programme is one of the biggest investments being made by the Welsh Government.

    It was unveiled in 2011 with a £1.4bn first wave of funding to develop better school buildings. It was seen as the best that could be done at a time of austerity.

    And depending on where you are in Wales and the state of your school building you might take the view that it is doing well by children or failing them.

    It has not looked at where and how individual councils are implementing aspects of the scheme but at the overall management by the Welsh Government.

    The report says the programme appears to be broadly on track – of the 169 planned projects, 59 are complete.

    NUT Cymru says the problem is there is not enough money overall and while pupils are being taught in substandard buildings, its putting them at a disadvantage.

    Some aspiring graphic designers choose to attend art schools, while others seek out graphic design majors at liberal arts universities, depending on their career goals and the degree of specialization they’re looking for. Online degree programs are also available and may be a good option for students who need to pursue their education remotely.

    What career and job opportunities are available to students with graphic design degrees?

    People with graphic design degrees can choose to take their careers in one of several different directions, depending on their interests and whether they prefer to freelance or work for a larger company. They may choose to freelance as Web designers, creating Web pages for clients. They may design logos or create book covers, either in a freelance capacity or as part of a publishing company. They can work as animators or illustrators, creating storyboards that later become television shows, movies, or video games. Those who prefer to work as part of a team may join advertising firms, creating marketing materials and ad campaigns for various companies. One of the most high-paying and coveted positions in the industry is as an in-house art director or creative director for a company, leading a team that is responsible for all of the artwork a company produces, including advertising, product packaging, and any media presence.

    A graphic design degree may prepare students to enter this growing industry in a number of different careers. Whether someone chooses to work freelance creating eye-catching logos or as an art director for a large company, there are many opportunities available to be a part of the graphic design industry and make a mark on the visual landscape.

    Interior Design

    Interior Design degree programs at Berkeley College focus on the creative and technical aspects of this exciting industry. Graduates are prepared with the necessary skills and practical knowledge to enter the industry in a range of roles.

    Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) and Associate’s degree programs prepare students to pursue careers in creative positions, as residential or commercial interior designers, exhibit designers, designers in architectural firms, and more.

    Faculty members in this program are selected for both academic excellence and relevant professional experience in interior design. They combine firsthand knowledge and know-how with classroom instruction for a thorough education for entry into the professional world.

    • A curriculum that focuses on exploring design fundamentals, theory, visual communication, culture, and history
    • Studio-based, hands-on projects, exploring all aspects of design through sketching, drafting, and color composition
    • Modern computer-aided design learning current programs used in the design industry, such as AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp Pro, Rhino, 3ds Max, and rendering with V-Ray
    • Valuable, practical experience through program-related, faculty-monitored internships or job-related assignments
    • A seamless transition between Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees

    Bachelor of Fine Arts Student Achievement Data

    Berkeley College collects and publishes the following information in connection with its accreditation with the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA). This data is separate and apart from the retention, graduation, and employment rates calculated and disclosed in accordance with federal law. With respect to the Interior Design B.F.A. program, a student taking 15 credits or more each semester could complete the program in four years or less. A part-time student taking nine credits each semester could complete the program in seven years or less. (An academic year is comprised of two semesters.)

    Student Attrition/Retention: 70.37% of all Interior Design B.F.A. students enrolled in the spring 2015 term were still enrolled in the program for the fall 2015 term.

    Graduation Rates: This program was first offered in fall 2011, so many of its students have not yet graduated. Of those who have completed the program, 90 percent have done so in four years or less. The remaining ten percent who have completed the program did so in five years or less.

    Acceptance into Graduate Programs: Of those who completed a program between September 2014 and June 2015, no program graduates enrolled in graduate school.

    The following employment information for those who completed a program between September 2014 and June 2015 was collected from graduates six months after graduation.

    • 96% of graduates were employed within six months of their graduation date in discipline-related jobs.
    • No graduates were employed in non-discipline related jobs.
