10 Ways to Make Your Home More Relaxing

Decorate With Real Furniture in Your Bathroom

If you have the space, a chair, or even a small stool, makes a bathroom feel more spa-like. In designer Victoria Pearson’s Ojai, California home, a tufted armchair, purchased from a 20th Century Fox prop sale, practically begs you to unwind. Gauzy curtains from Ikea let sunlight peek through the French doors. Tip: For upholstered pieces, choose an outdoor fabric to help resist moisture.

Stick to One Color for Dishware

A space feels more cohesive when you stick to one colorway. “I have tons of plates! It’s one thing I can’t resist. But most of them are white, with just a few green ones. That helps visually to keep it from being bogged down,” says Pearson. Matching them to the wall paint also helps unite a space so it feels less cluttered. Another advantage? Setting a gorgeous table is a breeze!

Add Billowy Curtains to Your Patio

The white gauze fabric on this Florida home’s patio creates a feeling of intimacy and peacefulness. “The veranda is more of an enclosure this way; it transports you,” says designer Bill Brockschmidt. “The curtains change the mood. Depending on whether they’re tied back or not—or closed completely. They have a breezy feeling and make the outdoor space seem cooler.” Throw pillows from Jennifer Garrigues .

Add Rustic Accessories

Burnished antiques add the perfect provincial touch so the home feels cozy and collected, rather than overly formal and fussy. “People sometimes take ‘comfort’ way too far and end up creating rooms that are bland and uncomfortable,” says Brockschmidt. “If this house were filled with big upholstered ‘put your feet up’ pieces, the place would be hotel-like. We used things like the Indian chairs by the sofa table in the living room less as a place to sit and more to add patina, a little intrigue.”

Rethink Natural Materials

The textured walls keep the dining room from feeling overly formal. “It’s not fabric—it’s woven mats from Pearl River that we framed with moldings. They’re actually yoga mats,” says designer Courtney Coleman. It’s a favorite decorator technique of ours—the texture is gorgeous.” Yoga mats by Pearl River .

Choose Casual Furniture

The key to beach living in this East Hampton cottage is reflected in its decor: no-fuss and comfy-chic. “Having furniture that’s plainspoken and not precious relaxes you,” says designer Tom Scheerer. Floral pillows and cushion fabric by Fig Leaf by Peter Dunham .

Upholster a Headboard

There’s nothing like an upholstered headboard to invite reading, relaxing, and lounging in bed. For the master bedroom, designer Scheerer softened a reproduction cannonball Ball & Bell bed with blue fabric.

Decorating Ideas for Kids Rooms

Do you want to make a smile on your kids’ face? Here are some great kids’ rooms decorating motifs that will surely make your kids cheerful. Amazing combination of brown and yellow in your kids’ room will make your kids stay all the day at their rooms. You can get this color combination by applying a bumble bee theme.

The best idea is to use gender neutral colors to paint your kid ’s room. For the baby s room, opt for light shades of brown and yellow, and for the boy /girl toddler pair, paint the walls a vibrant yellow and accent with a deeper brown.

To spice up your girl’s room, then you should paint the walls of your girl’s room a soft, vibrant yellow. Using eyelet lace curtains and a white canopy will turn your kid’s room into a wonderful place.

Keep in mind that soothing apple greens, blues, and soft yellows are great for your kid’s room. To add pleasure to your kid’s room, then you should place a colorful kid’s rug in your kid’s room.

To adorn your kid’s room, then you can hang posters and wallpapers of fairies or mermaids on your kid’s room walls. Likewise, consider painting the foundation portion of the wall two shades darker and the top portion one shade lighter. To freshen up your kid’s room, then get some various decorative flowers and arrange them around the walls in a row, or hang them randomly on the wall.

Don’t forget to add one or two nightstands on either side of the bed, painted white. To enhance the overall look of your kid’s room, then you should buy a black dresser and take into account it will work both in a safari room and in a kids’ room.

How 9 Designers Decorated Their Kids’ Rooms

Fun Lighting

“Of course I had lots of ideas about how my children’s rooms should look, but I wanted to empower them, so I consulted with each. My 13-year-old, Isabelle, went for a blue, brown, and cream palette with splashes of orange. We decorated the walls with a mix of her own art and some photography, but the pièce de résistance is definitely the feathered light fixture.” —Philip Gorrivan, Interior Designer

Family Heirloom

“For my three-year-old, Tahlia, I started with a vibrant hand-painted John Robshaw fabric — originally a pillow — and had it wrapped around a simple drum light. But to me, the most special element is the quilt draped across her bed. It has been in my family forever and was on my parents’ bed throughout my childhood. I adore knowing that my sweet girl is comforted by it each night.” —Krista Nye Schwartz, Interior Designer

Display Collections

“My eight-year-old son, Beck, is an avid collector — autographed baseballs, vintage fly-fishing gear, arrowheads — and a voracious reader. The burled maple console next to his reading chair is a handsome way to display his treasures.” —Tami Ramsay, Interior Designer

Sophisticated Color Scheme

“The bedrooms in our old house are rather small, so it was a challenge to make enough space for my twin baby girls. I think the punch-and-aqua color scheme is chic but, above all, happy and fun.” —Christina Sullivan Roughan, Interior Designer

Personal Art

“My son Sam has always been a history and mythology buff, so when I brought home this painting of Gilgamesh, he was overjoyed. He never really cared about his room — his only request was green walls — but once we hung the painting, he took a real interest.” —Fiona Newell Weeks, Interior Designer

Small Space

“This cozy space is perfect for my youngest son, Buck, age six, who likes to build forts and hide out. For a closet, I painted an old pine wardrobe the color of the walls, which makes it recede — a great small-space trick!” —Annie Mahoney, Interior Designer

Secret Passage

“In our loft, I wanted to create engaging spaces where Lola, 11, and Sam, 13, could be on their own yet also interact in a spontaneous way.
