TESTIMONIALS

Manuel Müller, COO

Huber Fine Watches & Jewellery, Vaduz, Lichtenstein

Das Resultat erfüllt alle unsere Erwartungen in punkto Design, Benutzerfreundlichkeit und Kostentreue. Ebenso wichtig: Wir verzeichnen eine noch höhere Kundenzufriedenheit.

SANJAY SURTANI, DIRECTOR

HELENA JEWELERS, TORTOLA/ST. MAARTEN, THE CARIBBEAN

Our newest venture in Tortola had the tightest of deadlines. From start to finish, at Obrist, everything was very well planned, outlined and described which ensured that the process was as efficient as possible. Thanks to their vast experience in all aspects including project management, logistics and assembly, both in the Caribbean and globally, we were able to meet deadlines and their flexibility ensured they were a pleasure to work with.

DAVID COLERIDGE, CHAIRMAN

THE WATCH GALLERY, LONDON, ENGLAND

We have now been working with Obrist for almost 10 years. Their long standing relationship with Rolex ensures that the designs developed are in line with the brands expectations and incorporate all the latest developments. Their timely and efficient production ensures stores open on time and to budget.

HOWARD APPOTIVE, PRESIDENT

HOWARD FINE JEWELLERS, OTTAWA, CANADA

Obrist has fulfilled our expectations with regard to design and achieved a beautiful result from combining different ideas. They have also fully satisfied my wish to have perfect lighting conditions for ceilings and showcases. We can now present our own company-made jewellery range to its best advantage.

A London Interior Designer’s Elegant, Eclectic Flat

Name: Anouska Tamony and her partner Scott

Location: East Dulwich — London, UK

Years lived in: 1.5 years, owned

Anouska shares a stunning London flat with her partner Scott. A light-filled home set in a turn-of-the-century terraced house (built in 1898), there are two bedrooms, a wonderfully wallpapered bathroom, a sitting room and a spare bedroom used as a study and guest room. The architecture is gorgeous — and Anouska’s filled it with a modern and eclectic mix of furnishings, color and graphics.

Anouska and Scott chose the East Dulwich area because it has village charm but is also close to the vibrant Peckham area. It’s the same with the feel of their home. As an interior designer, Anouska has melded soothing spaces with dynamic ones for a very beautiful and interesting mix.

“Scott and I love to travel and often return from our trips with carpets, art, furniture and miscellaneous objects. We wanted to incorporate these items into our home and give each room a distinctive feel. My favourite piece of furniture is the pretty Chinoiserie lacquer firescreen found in Malacca because it reminds me of a wonderful three week trip from Hong Kong to Singapore via Vietnam and Malaysia,” wrote Anouska

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My style: Colourful, exotic, classic

As the granddaughter of a couture seamstress whose studio proved a treasure trove of interesting finds to me as a child, colour and pattern usually make an appearance, though the chemistry and contrasts could be subtle and delicate or playful and bold depending on the mood I’m seeking to conjure.

My designs often mix classic with contemporary and almost always include statement lighting, interesting rugs and unexpected flourishes.

Inspiration: East meets West, heritage, antiques, textiles

Favorite element: The unique pieces of art and furniture collected on travels and handed down from family

Biggest challenge: Adding character on a tight first-time buyer’s budget

What friends say: It’s a unique, a little daring and very much our style and taste

Biggest embarrassment: The exterior…that’s coming next

Proudest diy: Upholstering the gorgeous french salon chair in the study

Biggest indulgence: The solid oak parquet in the sitting room

Best advice: Trust your instinct and take risks!

I understand where fitted kitchen and bathroom furniture is concerned you’ve got to be particularly prudent but where decisions are not too expensive to change, like paint colour or soft furnishings, try not to fear the odd mistake and enjoy the experimentation.

Dream sources: Being let loose with an unlimited budget in Guinevere Antiques and Talisman…their collections are always a feast for the eyes!

    Structure

    • Phase 1: Analysis of Practice and Exploration of Methodologies
    • Phase 2: Development and Consolidation
    • Phase 3: Resolution

These phases are set within a credit framework of three assessed units:

    • Studio practice and Advanced studio practice, which run sequentially
    • Theoretical studies, which runs throughout the course

Studio practice involves evolving and developing a personal programme of studio work and related research. Theoretical Studies provides a framework for you to develop a critical research paper, enabling you to locate your ideas and practice in relation to contemporary debate on cultural and theoretical issues.

Throughout the course you participate in individual and group tutorials, develop skills through Personal Professional Development workshops and on-line resources while the postgraduate talks are organised to introduce you to a range of visiting artists and practitioners.

    Work experience and opportunities

We provide our students with a valuable bridge between study and professional practice, as they engage with leading practitioners through the course. This helps students redefine their current and future practice as professional designers, or progress to further research.

SMA design had been utilising museum design techniques for the last 5 years which are only finding their way into museums now.

This doesn’t mean high tech equals high cost solutions; in fact we are an advocate of low high tech. It’s the ability of knowing how people interact with 2D 3D information and visitor flows that allow us to design exhibitions that leave the visitors less tired so able to more efficiently absorb information.

By displaying or imparting information in a less exhausting and enjoyable delivery method, visitors are able to retain more of what they have experienced and not surprisingly increase the likelihood of a repeat visit.

Even our approach to working with museums, foundations or private collectors is very different from the norm. So if we have wetted your appetite to see the SMA design difference then please contact one of our museum design team who will at the very least give you some good advice.
