Air Conditioning Glendale

Are you able to get anything done when you’re feeling hot, sticky, and irritable? Just about no one is, and that’s because our bodies are telling our minds that we need to stop working when we feel that way so that we don’t overheat. When you’re trying to get your home or office cool, Glendale air conditioning is important! If you live or work in the area, you’ll definitely need to have a high quality working air conditioner!

Air conditioning is a phrase that is thrown around on an everyday basis but do you know what air conditioning really is? Air conditioning is actually a phrase that can be used to describe a number of different things, but generally we think of it as a way to cool or de-humidify the air in our homes or work. A Glendale air conditioner is actually very necessary as this area of the world, as the heat can cause anyone to not want to do anything no matter whether they’re at work or trying to relax or do chores at home.

Most Glendale air conditioning systems are actually central
air systems, which is a wise idea because most residents find themselves using their air conditioning often far more than their heater or furnace. There are a wide array of different makers of air conditioning units. It is our job to help you to stay cool and comfortable, and we do that by not only installing air conditioning units, but also by servicing them and repairing them.

If you need your AC maintained or installed, give us a call!

How to Diagnose an Air Conditioner Capacitor Problem

How to Test Your Air Conditioner Capacitor

Are you having air conditioning problems in your home and suspect it may be an air conditioner capacitor problem? Below I have laid out a step-by-step guide on how to test your AC capacitor to see if it is good or if you have a capacitor problem.

First before I go any further I need to lay out this disclaimer! WARNING This procedure involves a risk of shock do not attempt this unless you are familiar with high-voltage safety.

Ok, here are the tools you will need:

    • Screw Driver with an insulated handle
    • Insulated Gloves
    • Meter with micro farads or meter with resistance (ohms)
    1. If you are unfamiliar with high voltage in your outdoor unit, do not attempt this procedure.
    2. Remove the disconnect or turn off the circuit breaker this should turn off the 240 volts to the outside unit
    3. Turn your thermostat down below room temperature and select cooling (this will still send 24 volts to the outside unit but the 240 volts required to run the compressor and fan should be off from the disconnect or circuit breaker)
    4. Check that the outdoor unit is not running (you will hear a hum but the unit is not running)
    5. Turn thermostat to OFF (this will turn off the 24 volts to unit and the humming will stop)
    6. Remove the panel covering the electrical components
    7. Put on your insulated gloves
    8. Get your screwdriver with an insulated handle
    9. Take the screwdriver and touch both the C (common) connection and the HERM (compressor) tabs on the top of the capacitor to discharge the HERM side of the capacitor.
    10. Take the screwdriver and touch both the FAN and the C common tabs on the top of the capacitor to discharge the FAN side of the capacitor
    11. Make a note which wire is connected to which terminal (ex. Brown to Fan, red to C, Purple to C, Yellow to HERM) each brand of system may vary slightly, so write down the terminal-wire connection
    12. Remove the wires from the capacitor
    13. (opt1) Take the leads from the meter, with the meter set on micro-farads and check the reading with one lead on C and the other on either the HERM or FAN tabs
    14. (opt1) if the reading is in the operating range written on the side of the capacitor then the capacitor is good
    15. (opt2) with the meter set on ohms, check the reading with one lead on C and the other on either the HERM or FAN tabs
    16. (opt2) watch the reading rise from zero (0) to its max and then fall back to zero (you are charging and discharging the capacitor on the resistance setting) if the maximum reading is in the operating specification on the side of the capacitor, then the capacitor is good.
    17. Replace the wires exactly as they were taken off in step 9 using your notes
    18. Replace the electrical cover on the unit
    19. Replace the electrical disconnect

Always call an experienced HVAC professional to check your capacitor.

    Heat Pump Thermostat

I have told you before that the heat pump thermostat is completely different from the regular thermostat or an air conditioner thermostat. In this article I will explain to you the difference and I will show you how to replace it and how to hook up all the wiring.

Most thermostats in general are very easy to install and yet most contractors charge between $150 to $250 and it only costs $25-$50 and takes less than 10 min to install, so next time when you have someone telling you this is the holy grail of the thermostats, talks or it does this or does that, take my word for it, he wants to rip you off, all digital thermostats work the same way. and most of them are programmable so don’t fall for that.

Now before we go any further let’s first understand what the thermostat actually does. The thermostat is nothing but a switch- yup you heard that right, it is exactly like your light switch. As a matter of fact, you can replace a thermostat with a light switch and the heat pump or the air conditioner won’t know the difference.

The only difference is that you turn the light switch manually but the thermostat will turn on or off based on a set temperature you can adjust. So the next time you are too hot and you want to turn your thermostat on don’t lower the temperature setting thinking you are making your air conditioner work harder.

Guess what! It won’t work any harder. it will just make the air conditioner work longer to meet your low setting temperature, it is not a gas throttle

So now what is the different between an air conditioner thermostat and a heat pump thermostat?

Let’s start with the air conditioner:

If you have a regular air conditioner you must also have a source of heating (most likely a furnace). So when you need cooling your thermostat has to turn on the air conditioner (the compressor, the indoor blower and the outdoor fan), and when you need heating the thermostat has to turn on the furnace and the indoor blower.

Air Conditioner Thermostat uses 4 wires and one optional

    · Yellow – Compressor wire and outdoor fan. If you jump (connect) the R-red and Y-yellow the compressor will turn on.

    · Green – Indoor blower wire. If you jump (connect) the R –red and G-green the indoor blower will turn on.

    · White – Furnace wire. If you jump (connect) the R –red and W-white the furnace will turn on.

    · Blue wire is common. This is optional since most thermostats have batteries and don’t need that wire.

This thermostat is very easy to install and replace, and yet most contactors charge between $150 to $200 to do this. The thermostat only costs $25-$35 and takes less than five minutes to install.

Remember, if you want to do this yourself.

    · Turn the air conditioner breaker off when you attempt to replace the thermostat.

    · Not everyone follows the same color code so always look at the old thermostat wiring. If the blue wire is connected to the Y terminal then connect the Blue wire to the Y terminal in the new thermostat.

So what about the heat pump thermostat?

If you have a heat pump you don’t have a furnace since the heat pump provides cooling and heating. So when cooling is required your thermostat has to turn on the air conditioner (the compressor, the indoor blower, the outdoor fan and put the reversing valve in the cooling mode). When heating is required the thermostat has to turn on the compressor, the indoor blower, the outdoor fan and put the reversing valve in the heating mode. It also has to turn on the Auxiliary Heater if needed and Emergency Heat if needed.

The reversing valve is either turned on or off. 99% of time the reversing valve is on when the system is in the cooling mode and it is off when the system is in heating mode.

Some old heat pumps are reversed, meaning that when the reversing valve is active it is heating and when it is off it is cooling. Most thermostats have both options:

Notice that heat pump thermostat uses 5 wires (not 4 like a normal AC)and one optional:

    · Yellow – Compressor and outdoor fan wire. If you jump (connect) the R –red and Y-yellow the compressor will turn on.

    · Green – Indoor blower wire. If you jump (connect) the R –red and G-green the indoor blower will turn on.

    · White – the Auxiliary heat wire. If you jump (connect) the R –red and W-white the Auxiliary Heat and/or Emergency Heat will turn on.

    · Brown – O/B the reversing valve terminal which most likely is a brown color. Connect the O terminal if the reversing is active in cooling mode (99% of the time), connect the B terminal if the reversing is active in heating mode (very rare) But remember it is eitherO or B- don’t connect both terminals.

    · Blue wire is common wire. This wire is optional since most thermostats have batteries and don’t need it

Remember if you want to do this yourself,

    · Turn the heat pump breaker off when you attempt to replace the thermostat

    · Not everyone follows the same color code so always look at the old heat pump thermostat wiring. If blue wire is connected to the Y terminal then connect the Blue wire to the Y terminal in the new thermostat.

New Natural Gas Air Conditioning Is Very Efficient

QUESTION: My old central air conditioner still works, but I wonder if I should replace it with a super-efficient one. How much can I expect to save on my electric bills? Are the new natural gas cooling units efficient?

ANSWER: Your old air conditioner probably has a SEER (efficiency ratio) of about 6 or 7. A new super-efficient electric unit has a SEER of 15. Installing one can cut your cooling costs by more than 50%. New natural gas central air conditioning units have an equivalent SEER as high as 27.

New super-efficient electric air conditioning units use two-speed compressors and variable-speed indoor blowers. On the low energy saving speed (runs at high speed only on the hottest days), each cycle run time is longer. Indoor temperature swings between on-off cycles are virtually eliminated.

The air gently circulates almost continuously and noise is reduced. With soft start, the initial burst of warm (cold in the winter) air from the ducts is eliminated. This is ideal for allergy sufferers because air cleaners are more effective and humidity levels, mold, mites, etc. are reduced.

The indoor blowers use special electrically commutated motors. These not only provide true variable-speed operation for better comfort, but they use less than half as much electricity as standard blower motors.

The most efficient single-speed air conditioning units use scroll compressors. Scroll compressors have fewer moving parts than standard reciprocating piston compressors. Without pistons and valves, scroll compressors are quieter too.

As scroll compressors wear over years of operation, they seal better and operate smoother than when they were new. Their basic design is reliable, and they should continue to operate at high efficiency levels for many years.

If you have natural gas, there are gas-powered air conditioning units that use a no-compressor absorption process. These also heat your house in the winter.

Another super-efficient gas central air conditioning and heating unit uses a compressor. With an equivalent SEER of 27, it can cut cooling costs by 75%. It looks just like a standard electric central air conditioning unit outdoors and is quieter.

A small natural gas-powered engine runs the compressor. Since an engine can run at any speed, its microprocessor continually, fine-tunes the cooling output (17 levels) to the precise cooling needs of your house.

In the winter, this year-round gas air conditioning unit heats your house at more than 100% efficiency. It combines the heat pump principal with the excess heat from running the engine. This can cut your heating costs by half too.

Write for Update Bulletin No. 528 showing a buyer’s guide of super-efficient gas and electric central air-conditioning manufacturers listing efficiency, cooling capacity, compressor type and number of speeds, features and a savings-selector chart. Please send $2 and a business-size self addressed, stamped envelope to James Dulley, Los Angeles Times, 6906 Royalgreen Drive, Cincinnati, OH 45244.

What Sun Room Design Is Most Efficient?

Q: I am planning the addition of a sun room to my house. I will use it for growing some plants and hope to get some free solar heating in the winter from it. Should I get one with a slanted or vertical front?

A: Get one with a vertical or near vertical front. Although the slanted front designs are usually less expensive, they tend to overheat in the summer, even in northern climates.

If you plan to use your sun space to help heat your house in the winter, include adequate solar mass. This is often accomplished with a heavy brick or concrete floor. You will also need a fan to move the warm air indoors.

Letters and questions to Dulley, a Cincinnati-based engineering consultant, may be sent to James Dulley, Los Angeles Times, 6906 Royalgreen Drive, Cincinnati, OH 45244.

Action Furnace can help you with the latest features and add-ons to your system – including gas-fired furnace integration for an all-in-one new installation, easy-to-read digital thermostats, air quality control including anti-allergy and humidity management, and zoning – the ability to set different climate levels around your home for total control.

When it comes to keeping your home at a constant temperature an air conditioning system provides a guarantee of comfort. And when you have already invested so much in your home, you and your family might as well enjoy climate controlled comfort each and every day.

An additional benefit to this element of control is that every member of the family can have their area of the home just the way they like – by adding zoning to your air conditioning system, that’s exactly what you can achieve.
