When you’re redesigning your bedroom, it’s easy to overlook the ceiling. But if you think of that space as a clean canvas, there are a number of options you can choose from to add unforgettable style to your space.

Gorgeous Architectural Add-Ons for the Bedroom

Bricks and Beams

Exposed beams draw the eye up and bring attention to the delicate chandelier and cozy brick fireplace. Even if your home doesn’t already have beams, they can be added for easy architectural appeal with a rustic vibe.

DIY Wall Treatment

A fun weekend project, this plush wall treatment serves to add texture and works double duty as a makeshift headboard. This cozy accent wall was created by wrapping pieces of plywood with batting and burlap. They were then stapled and attached to the wall with a nail gun.

Floor to Ceiling

For an unexpected twist on the traditional hardwood floor, this beautiful bedroom boasts a stunning wooden ceiling with an interesting pattern that showcases even more creativity in the bold, bright space.

Decorative Details

One of the best ways to add traditional sophistication to the bedroom is with the use of white wainscoting along the walls. In this earthy master bedroom, mustard brown walls are the perfect color choice to offset the white wainscoting and plank ceiling, while still maintaining a natural, organic look.

Take a Seat

Fabulous built-in storage and a window seat take this space from basic bedroom to custom sleeping quarters. If adding built-ins seems like too daunting a task, an indoors small bench or loveseat with flanking bookshelves can offer a similar look.

Architectural Interest

Intricate molding and an alcove for the bed lend much-needed detail and interest to this basic, contemporary space, allowing the rest of the room’s decor to remain neat and simple. Design by Ben Herzog

Bright White

To create a light, airy feel in this master bedroom by designer Julia West, exposed beams were painted white for a style that takes advantage of texture without weighing down the space.

Draw the Line

In this unique bedroom, chair molding separates the graphic wallpaper from the deep green walls beneath, which keeps the bold wallpaper from overwhelming the space. Design by Emily Henderson

Cuddly Cocoon

A wall niche in this nature-inspired master bedroom creates a cozy nest for the homeowners and adds a hint of drama to the queen-sized bed and surrounding artwork.

Sky-High Design

A vaulted ceiling is a dramatic architectural detail that can make a room feel more open and add an elegant touch to any space. In this bedroom, seen on Sarah’s House on HGTV, an antique four-poster bed and stunning chandelier draw attention to the room’s soaring ceiling.

Modern Meets Retro

While some paneling can make a home feel dated, the dark horizontal paneling in this eclectic bedroom by designer Judith Balis looks fresh and contemporary with a dose of rusticity. Add paneling just behind the bed to create a charming accent wall.

Built-In Style

Your favorite reads are never out of reach when a neighboring built-in bookshelf borders the bed. Great for displaying small treasures and storing books and magazines, a shelf beside the bed can also serve as an out-of-the-box nightstand.

Your ceiling design options go beyond whether to stay with a traditional flat, bright white surface or a ceiling with “popcorn” or some other texture. Your ceiling doesn’t even have to be white. For a simple and inexpensive but dramatic change, consider painting your ceiling the same shade as the other walls of your room. Some design experts recommend painting your ceiling a lighter shade of the same color as your walls. Consider the colors you’re using throughout the room, even in your accessories. You could also have a mural painted on the ceiling. Favorites for bedrooms include clouds, stars and other sky scenes.

Ceilings are a great place to incorporate architectural elements such as coffers and boxed beams. If your remodel includes construction, consider a vaulted ceiling to add both drama and light to your bedroom. A barrel-vaulted ceiling over the bed can help create an intimate space while also adding room for dramatic lighting options. A vaulted ceiling flanked by large windows can create a stunning focal point looking out over a beautiful nature scene or garden. Skylights between the beams of a vaulted ceiling will help create the feeling of sleeping outdoors, and they can give you a great view of the stars at night and sunshine in the morning.

You don’t have to raise the roof to add interest, however. A tray ceiling gives a room a traditional and elegant touch, and beadboard overhead softens a room’s look and works well with a country decor.

Architectural elements work particularly well with ceilings in large rooms, adding interest and eliminating the often monotonous look of the flat, white surface overhead. Coffers or boxed beams add dimension and work well in rooms with high ceilings. If you are remodeling an older home, boxed beams can hide new electrical wiring, conduits or heating and air ductwork. The spaces between the beams provide yet another opportunity to add interest to your bedroom, perhaps with colored glass pieces arranged in a unique design. Or you can install coffers in geometric shapes other than rectangles. Paint the coffers or leave the wood bare depending on your personal preference and the decor of your room.

Lighting is another important part of ceiling design. If you install a tray ceiling, lighting can be a hidden element. You can also place lighting behind a gossamer canopy for a dreamy effect.

26 Small Bedroom Decorating Ideas That Will Leave A Major Impression

When a space has good style, size doesn’t matter.

Small bedrooms can have a big impact with the right design. Whether you opt for the illusion of more square footage or embrace what you have, there are endless ways to make a small space livable and chic.

Here are 26 inspiring small bedroom ideas to try.

In the guest bedroom of a Paris apartment, the custom forged-iron bed frame is finished in gold leaf and is dressed with pillows in Robert Normand and Lelièvre fabrics. The light fixture is a 1940 plaster bird sculpture, and the curtains are of a Pierre Frey chintz and Dedar fabric.

Inside a historic house in upstate New York, the grey-and-white guest room downstairs makes a case for the less-is-more approach. The bed is dressed in linens by Matteo, the side chair was found in India and the stool is from Dennis & Leen. The lithograph is by Joan Miró.

In Northern France, the daybed in this guest room is Louis XVI, and is the perfect, small-space alternative to a large bed frame. The side table in the same style is from the 19th century.

The custom bed in this Oakland, California guest room is a sleek twin size, maximizing floor space without sacrificing comfort. The linens are by Ralph Lauren Home, the floor lamp is by Original BTC, the rug is Persian, and the glitter-on-canvas artwork is by René Garcia, Jr.

In a tight guest bedroom in Paris, the custom day-bed, walls and curtains are in Pierre Frey fabrics. French doors flood the space with natural light, making the space feel larger.

In a young couple’s monochromatic Swedish home, the master bedroom blends white and cool brown for a color scheme that makes the petite space feel more open and airy. The bed is by Hästens, and the lamp and stool are vintage.

The 18th-century sleigh bed in the master bedroom of a Paris pied-a-terre is covered in a Travers fabric; the 17th-century Italian wall sconce is from Galerie Sylvain Lévy- Alban.

In art and furniture dealer Ralph Pucci’s Long Island beach house, a guest bedroom is characterized by whispers of grey and blue, which give the small space some big personality. The Charles P. Rogers bed is dressed in bedding by Restoration Hardware , and a Bertoia chair is paired with a vintage Indonesian desk. The photograph is by Christopher Makos .

In a couple’s 19th-century villa high in the hills on the isle of Capri, even the home’s smaller spaces offer an easygoing, contemporary retreat. In the tiny guest room, an installation of porcelain roses is by Art et Floritude. The marble tub is antique, and the floor is paved with travertine tiles.

In Ralph Lauren executive Buffy Birrittella’s East Hampton home, the bed in the master bedroom is from the Sundance Catalog. It is dressed with Ralph Lauren Home linens and an antique American quilt. The blanket chest and Tramp Art mirror are vintage, the sconces are by Ralph Lauren Home and the bedside table is custom made.

Ceramist Amanda Moffat’s Brooklyn townhouse has a big dose of personality with saturated colors, intricate patterns and an array of treasured heirlooms, and the attic bedroom is no exception. The Louis Vuitton trunk in the attic bedroom belonged to Moffat’s mother, the bed is dressed in Coyuchi linens, the 19th-century chair is from John Derian and the walls are painted in Benjamin Moore’s Decorator’s White.

New York City-based decorator Alex Papachristidis designed two twin beds, upholstered in a Mokum fabric, for the charming guest room in his London apartment. The side table is by John Dickinson.

In the historic 19th-century London house of Milan-based design duo, Roberto Peregalli and Laura Sartori , a small guest bedroom’s headboard, bed skirt, coverlet and wall covering are all of the same Braquenié cottons. The pillows are covered with 19th-century Fez broderie.

Home designer Michael Maher made the most of his small guest room in New Jersey by tucking twin beds under the eaves of the room. Maher designed the upholstered headboards and the coverlets are antique matelassé.

In Brazilian architect and designer Sig Bergamin’s Paris home, an 18th-century fabric fragment hangs above the guest-room bed. The chair is Indian and the wall is upholstered in a cotton by Fabricut .

20 Smart Design Solutions for Small Bedrooms

Let’s face it: Tiny nooks are the coziest snoozing spots.

Cramped quarters can feel claustrophobic, but a little strategic styling can transform a snug bedroom into a restful retreat. Make the most of your small space with these multitasking decorating ideas.

In her master bedroom, Justina Blakeney designed a curvy headboard with built-in nightstands. A vintage pendant eliminates the need for a table lamp, leaving more room for books.

Shop a similar look: rug ($349, wayfair.com), yellow wallpaper ($2, jossandmain.com), green velvet pillows ($33 and more, etsy.com)

Lacking a spare bedroom in his New York apartment, Amir Khamneipur created a pair of six-foot-long banquettes that pivot to become twin beds. Upholstered in a Perennials outdoor fabric, they have built-in drawers for stashing luggage.

Don’t be fooled. Dark colors do work in small spaces, including Moises Esquenazi’s Los Angeles bungalow. Benjamin Moore’s Newburg Green on the guest room walls plays off fabrics in hot tropical colors. “I don’t mind a bedroom that feels small, especially since its primary use is for sleeping,” he says. “Why should it not be dark, moody or sensual?”

In his “moody and eclectic” bedroom, designer Stephen Shubel mounted flea-market finds against a black wall. Genuine Fake Books wallpaper by Deborah Bowness creates the illusion of more space.

Shop a similar look: newspaper pillows ($10, etsy.com)

Mann-o-Print curtains frame a guest bedroom’s nautical berth with built-in drawers. The Louis XVI portrait is a photocopy paper assemblage by Woody Biggs.

Shop a similar look: navy and white curtains (price upon request, houseofmann.com), anchor pillow ($46, jossandmain.com), yellow bedding ($21, jossandmain.com)

To lighten up her studio’s windowless bed alcove, Sara Bengur painted the walls in Colorhouse’s Grain .01. It “makes the room feel like it’s bathed in Mediterranean sunshine,” she says. The hand-embroidered wool bedcover, kilim throw pillows and mohair-and-wool throw are all from Sara Bengur Shop.

In a tiny coastal cottage, a corner desk also acts as a nightstand. Underbed drawers sneak in extra storage, while walls covered in Designers Guild’s Moselle linen give off a restful vibe.

Shop a similar look: pale blue headboard ($138, jossandmain.com), aqua velvet pillow ($53, wayfair.com)

The master bedroom of a 950-square-foot Venetian retreat “feels like the inside of a boat, and the key was to keep it simple and cozy,” says designer Matthew White. He designed the screen, made by Il Prato out of their hand-printed paper, to function like a headboard and give the bed a little more substance. The colors repeat the same terra-cottas and blues seen throughout the apartment.

Sconces bracket a 525-square-foot apartment’s bed and take up less space than table lamps. The custom shades pick up the colors of the headboard, upholstered in Le Manach’s Toiles de Tours Nuage and trimmed in carpet binding.

Shop a similar look: monogrammed pillows ($50, etsy.com)

In a Marin County, California, beach house designed by Erin Martin and homeowner Kim Dempster, closet mirrors in the master bedroom expand the sense of space. The CB2 platform bed is covered in vintage French linen.

Shop a similar look: platform bed ($1,199, cb2.com), white linen bedding ($100, jossandmain.com)

In Kelly Giesen’s Manhattan apartment, the Wolf Home headboard, hung on the wall to save space, is upholstered in a silver fabric from Gray Line Linen. Tiny crystals glint on a Michelle Hatch pillow. For extra shimmer, Giesen had John Mahoney’s Kiku Komon wallpaper printed on silver Mylar. The chandelier is available through Kelly G Design.

In a 400-square-foot Brooklyn apartment designed by Fitzhugh Karol and Lyndsay Caleo of The Brooklyn Home Company, IKEA’s Brimnes bed has drawers underneath, for more storage.

In Moises Esquenazi’s Los Angeles bungalow, the master bedroom is dark and cozy, with walls in Farrow Ball Mahogany No. 36. Esquenazi designed the mohair velvet headboard; curtains are Donghia’s Uma Black Print. Leather Saigon stools are from Bourgeouis Boheme. “I don’t mind a bedroom that feels small, especially since its primary use is for sleeping. Why should it not be dark, moody or sensual?” he says.

In David Kaihoi’s 64-square-foot bedroom in Manhattan, he covered the walls in an eye-catching, hand-painted 18th-century Chinese wallpaper found at auction. “The idea was to create a jewel-box effect in the bedroom, with pattern to distract your senses from the tight quarters,” he says. “I papered the wall in the spirit of a collage trying to make the most of a beautiful old thing. Call it a new take on a traditional application.”

In Bill Brockschmidt’s 640-square-foot Manhattan apartment, the master bedroom’s curtains conceal bedside tables and a large storage area behind the bed.

Shop a similar look: white and green pillow ($38, jossandmain.com), light blue pillows ($42, jossandmain.com)

Covering the walls, headboard and bed skirt in the same fabric — a striped Ralph Lauren Home silk — is a tried-and-true decorating solution for unifying a small room, like designer Sam Allen’s Connecticut apartment bedroom.

Peter Dunham gave the tiny bedroom in his 550-square-foot Los Angeles apartment a sense of drama and scale by upholstering the walls in Bukhara from his fabric line. “I have a very imposing bed that gave my poky room style, a sense of scale, and the big pattern on the walls gave it a sense of depth,” he says. “I feel like I’m living big in a small space.”

“These nesting tables are great for the small master bedroom,” designer Krista Ewart says of a California beach bungalow. “Pull the little one out at night, push it back in when you’re not using it.”

“I love the hard geometry of the chest next to the frilly curtains,” designer Nick Olsen says of the bedroom area in a 295-square-foot Brooklyn studio. To add a soft touch to the metal Heimdal bed from IKEA, he slipcovered a length of foam in Schumacher’s Hong Kong for a headboard. Because of their large scale, Mercury glass lamps from Circa Lighting make an impact. They’re set on vintage end tables — originally brown, Olsen repainted them a bright Chinese red, “because every room needs a touch of red.”

“Most people think, ‘Oh my God, it’s going to take up most of the space, and then the room is going to seem small,'” designer Kelly Delrose says of her oversized bed. “Take the converse of that: If you put something big in there, everybody walks in and immediately sees this big bed and says, ‘Oh wow, this space is really big.’ Your eye plays tricks on you. Trust me it totally works.” Ralph Lauren’s RLX Bed in black anodized aluminum and carbon fiber CF1 chair in black leather give the master bedroom a sleek, modern look.
