Online Interior Design Courses and Certification Programs

Find out about online interior design courses and in which degree and training programs they’re most commonly offered. Get course descriptions, program information and in-person requirements to make an informed decision.

Essential Information

Online coursework in interior design is available mainly through degree programs offered at both for-profit and non-profit schools. Students who are interested in the field can choose a major in Interior Design, Interior Architecture or Fine Arts. Programs can lead to an associate’s degree, a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) or a certificate. These programs are offered in a blended format, combining online courses with on-campus requirements. Students who are interested in earning an online certificate in another design-related field may also consider professional certification in graphic design, which can be completed entirely online.

The classes within these programs typically cover the planning, livability and aesthetics involved in interior design. They also focus on design theory, process and studio work. Design elements and principles, space planning and color theory are part of the program. Through assignments that require hands-on design work, interior design students build a professional portfolio of their projects. Graduates are prepared for interior designer certification.

Interior Design Associate’s Degree

Offered by a few colleges, this entry-level online program covers areas like residential and commercial design, drawing techniques, use of computer-aided design software, and legal, financial, ethical and other issues encountered by interior designers. Students will be expected to take some general education requirements. Coursework for the 2-year degree program includes:

  • History of interior design
  • Color theory
  • Textiles
  • History of furniture
  • Architectural lighting design
  • Professional practice

Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design

Generally offered as a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, this 4-year online program requires the completion of internships and an extensive portfolio. Along with interior design courses, students also study related topics in anthropology, psychology, sociology and biology in order to gain a well-rounded perspective for creating livable, functional spaces. Students take classes in areas such as:

  • Holistic design
  • Drafting
  • Building codes and regulations
  • Design research
  • Office design

Master’s Degree in Interior Architecture and Design

A few schools offer this advanced degree in design online; it is offered as both a Master of Science and a Master of Fine Arts degree. The curriculum focuses on advanced techniques in interior architecture and design. Students complete a thesis or a directed project. They have access to other students and professors through an online course delivery system and can complete work on their own time, although specific milestones must be completed on time. Coursework can include:

  • Spatial design
  • Sketching for design
  • Lighting design
  • Materials use
  • Concept, theory and design process

Interior Design Certification

In order to become a certified interior designer through the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ), prospective interior designers must complete a formal program in interior design with a minimum of 40 semester hours of interior-design-related coursework, submit proof of work experience with an interior design firm and pass the 3-part Interior Design Fundamentals Exam administered by the NCIDQ. An exception is made for those with a Bachelor of Architecture or Master of Architecture, who do not need additional interior design education to take the exam.

Overall, there are lots of online courses and programs available in interior design, and they can prepare graduates for certification in the field. Students in undergraduate degree programs get a comprehensive overview of the design-related subjects as well as a general education, while online master’s degree programs typically offer a greater degree of flexibility in both curriculum and scheduling.

Top 50 Graphic Design Schools and Colleges

By Graphic Junkie Tuesday January 19, 2010

This ranking of graphic design schools began with the top fifteen as designated by the US News and World Report s annual survey of U.S. colleges and universities, 2012. That was the extent of their list so from there, the rankings have been derived from other ranking sources that could be relied upon as somewhat objective.

1. Rhode Island School of Design teaches Graphic Design utilizing a broad range of media as platforms.

2. Yale University School of Art offers an undergraduate art major that leads to specialization at the graduate level.

3. Maryland Institute College of Art Graphic Design major differentiates between the Book Arts Studio option for illustrators, photographers and print makers and the Graphic Design Studio option, which offers a classic approach to the commercial aspects of the field.

4. Carnegie Mellon University offers an undergraduate program in Communication Design that is their version of Graphic Design, presented in a multi-platform environment.

6. Cranbrook Academy of Art uses the term 2D to describe their Graphic Design program, taught.

8. California Institute of the Arts or Calarts as the institution is known offers both a BFA and an MFA in Graphic Design.

9. School of Visual Arts in New York has a Graphics Design undergraduate program that works in 2D, 3D and digital media.

15. University of Delaware Art Department offers a highly regarded BFA in Visual Communications that begins with graphic design fundamentals and then moves into the multiple platforms in the field.

To derive the remaining 35 graphic design schools on this list, we took the US News rankings of fine arts programs into account, provided the schools offered some sort of undergraduate or graduate program that incorporated the important elements of graphic design. So, we drew from the US News fine arts program rankings, and rankings of fine arts specializations, recognizing that some fine arts departments have relegated graphic design to other design-related corners of academia, often embracing it as a commercial form of fine art.

16. Penn State University Media Arts Department with undergraduate degrees in Graphic Design and Graphic Communications Management.

17. Kansas City Art Institute is an independent school that offers its Graphic Design studies through the School of Design and Electronic Arts.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched they must be felt with the heart.” These inspirational words come to us from the American educator, Helen Keller, who overcame the adversity of being blind and deaf to become one of the 20th century s leading humanitarians. We can relate this thought to the field of design as well as “Design must first be felt to be expressed”. Creativity is an expression of our inner being and how we make sense of the world around us. Each of you who have chosen to embark on a career in the Creative Arts will understand what I mean. Every thought and idea begins in the mind and is translated through the fingertips onto paper. New technology now makes it possible for us to translate our ideas directly onto computers.

EVENTS AT VOGUE Campus Atmosphere filled with Fun, Frolic Joy.

We don t believe in all studies and no play, and hence you will be surrounded by euphoric events all year round to give you a break and to bring out the rockstar in you. And you said education was boring?

Testimonials

“I started off pursuing my bachelor in education, however after one year decided my interests lay in design and in particular interior design. It was through a lot of research that I picked and enrolled in the Diploma of Interior Design at AICD in Brisbane. I started not knowing exactly what to expect of the course, but was pleased to spend the first 6 months understanding core elements and principles of design.

The second 6 months was putting this into practice and into more industry focused scenarios and working on things like client briefs and presentation boards. Through client briefs I found my career path, which is redesigning and redecorating residential homes. The practical approach of the course, including excursions and teachers experience has cemented my knowledge of the industry. Apart from learning the best part has been meeting new people and creating new friendships.”

Scoring a new notch in its belt, CATC Design School has produced another award-winning designer. Emily Robertson, a 2014 graduate from the Interior Design Decoration diploma in Melbourne, has defined herself by winning two Design Institute Australia graduate awards at both the state and national levels.

    THE AWARDS

She took out the DIA Australian Graduate of the Year award (AGOTYA) in the category of Interior Design Decoration, having qualified for the national round by winning the Victoria/Tasmania DIA Graduate of the Year Award. Emma Fenton, Melbourne’s CATC Interior Design and Decoration Program Manager, recognised Emily s blooming talent and entered her in both the state and national competition.

    EMILY’S BACKGROUND

Before enrolling at CATC Design School, Emily had previously worked as a nurse for ten years; however, she says her passion has always been design. She made a huge leap into the unknown from nursing and has never looked back.

Emily is now working with Interior Designer Lisa Christie (another CATC Design School graduate!) at Lisa Christie Designs on a number of different projects, assisting with everything from presentation boards, to scheduling and sourcing.
