Interior Decorating


The 2016/2017 fee for two semesters is
– domestic $3,966.89
– international $14,200.
Amounts listed are the total of tuition, lab and material fees, student service and auxiliary fees for the first two semesters of the 2016/2017 academic year. Fees are subject to change.

$1,500 per semester for books and supplies.

Note: Specialty equipment including scale rule, drafting equipment, cutting and markers, etc. are required. Additional materials such as paper and board materials will be required on an ongoing basis based on project and student needs.

Extra fees apply for optional field experience.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:
• Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
– Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U or equivalent)
– Three Grade 11 or Grade 12 C, M or U courses in addition to those listed above
• Mature student status
• College or university transfer status

All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy .

Selection: Admission selection is based on the academic criteria indicated. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission.

Additional Requirements

Secondary school studies in drawing and drafting are recommended. The ability to draw is an essential skill. Students should have drawing and sketching training prior to entering the course.

Our Program

Humber’s Interior Decorating diploma program combines essential creative and practical elements with insights into current interior decorating trends.

Hone your artistic flair and develop your professional skills to launch your career. Learn how to design space for both residences and workplaces as an interior decorator. Nurture your creative ability using the principle elements of the design industry.

You will learn from practising interior decorating experts in our design studios, with hands-on experience and training using market specific materials and access to paints and fabric samples in our own resource library. Guest speakers, trade shows, field trips and out-of-country adventure opportunities await you. Using the latest in technology software programs, you will explore the world of design and find finishes, textiles, objects d’art and essential elements that evolve into beautiful, workable spaces expertly designed for living.

Our program will complement your creative and technical expertise with essential business training in how to run your own enterprise and manage your own projects. You will hone your understanding of specifications and how to present design ideas and communicate effectively with real clients. Round out your interior decorating education with instruction in mechanical, electrical, plumbing services and building methods, including residential finishes, computer drafting, sketching interiors and digital communications.

If you choose, you can put your learning into a professional context and build industry experience and contacts through a work placement.

List of Courses

Semester 1

Interior decorators work with clients and consult on programming through to installation phases. Components selection encompasses style, colour schemes, space plan layouts, elevations perspective sketches, lighting, furniture, floor finishes, wall finishes, kitchen and bathroom design, accessories, and many more details.

Interior decorators can provide conceptual sketches, computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), generated working drawings, and other design-related essentials to their clients including product specification, as well as cost estimates for client approval.

Decorators can also choose from other career avenues including window display, event planning, décor magazines, television work, home staging and much more.

Humber graduates have gone on to become interior decorating magazine editors-in-chief, featured magazine interior decorators, TV personalities with their own show, guest TV decorators, newspaper feature article leaders, interior decorating business owners, event planners, managers of decorating retail stores, design consultants and buyers to name but a few.

Humber’s program explores the links to magazine and television creating opportunities for students to make direct connections to the industry through trade shows, our own Design Dilemma day, magazine articles, client staging opportunities and much more.

Work Placement

Our program features an optional decorating field experience of a minimum of 240 hours, following semester two. Students who enrol in January can complete some of the field experience during the summer break and have the option of completing the 240 hours in tandem with classes. Regardless of when students choose to opt into their field experience, they must complete a career management workshop. Humber assists students as they arrange their field experience, including working with business, industry and government to identify work placement opportunities.

Your Future Study Options

Graduates with an overall grade point average (GPA) of 75 per cent or more may be considered for admission to Humber’s Bachelor of Interior Design degree program. A portfolio assessment is also required. Graduates may then complete the degree program with the equivalent of six semesters of full-time study plus a paid work term.

Graduates must also possess ENG4U or Humber’s COMM 200/WRIT 100 or COMM 300/ WRIT 200 with a grade of 65 per cent or more, plus any Grade 12 U-level Mathematics or Humber’s TMATH 111 or DMAT 100 with a grade of 60 per cent or more.
