Introduction

The Full Time Diploma course is intensive design training for passionate career changers looking to enter the industry. This yearlong course will challenge and inspire students to strive for new levels of design excellence, as they work through a series of residential and commercial projects. Inspirational lectures, practical workshops, site visits and visiting industry professionals all combine to form a course which is both industry relevant and professionally respected; meaning students graduate with the skills and confidence to gain employment or to go on to further higher education level studies, such as the BA (Hons) Interior Design Top Up .

Term One

Students are introduced to life at KLC and their studio learning environment through a series of fun, interactive workshops and lectures on the design process, creativity and concepts and trends. There is detailed teaching of new visual communication skills, such as sketching, technical drawing and rendering, and computer aided design (CAD) software, including InDesign, EstiPC and AutoCAD. The groundwork is laid for the forthcoming year by familiarising students with core topics such as professional practice, critical thinking for design, the history of interior design and building construction and regulations. Industry guest lecturers are also interspersed throughout the term to inspire students and give them insight into specific fields of design, such as textiles, bathroom design and sustainability.

Term Two

Design Project 2 Conceptual Design
Design Project 3 Product Design

This term moves on to focus on more specialist subjects, including lighting design and product design, with industry experts introducing students to joinery, ceramics and upholstery, as well as an exploration of the use of technology within design. Visual communication skills are also improved upon with workshops on one and two point perspective sketching, and new computer aided design programmes, such as SketchUp and Photoshop, being introduced. An opportunity for integrated work experience is also available during the Easter break*.

Term Three

Design Project 4 Group Commercial Project
Design Project 5 Large Self-directed Project (of students choice)

Students round off their course with two large projects a live, socially focused group project, in conjunction with the KLC Design Changes Lives Foundation, and a final major project of their choice which will form the basis of their exhibition display. There is a strong focus on commercial design, professional practice and industry regulations throughout these final projects, to ensure students are industry ready. This includes an introduction to a final CAD programme Vectorworks. At the end of the Diploma course, the KLC Careers Service offers 121 sessions for portfolio and CV advice, internships and interviews. The year then culminates in a final Exhibition and Graduation ceremony, which is attended by designers and professionals from the interiors industry.

*Unfortunately due to visa regulations, we are unable to offer work experience to international students on a Tier 4 visa. A Virtual Work Experience alternative is available.

Study Method

Monday Friday 10.00am 4.00pm

Students studying full time can expect to receive extensive tutor support and personalised supervision throughout their time at KLC.

The course is five days a week for one year, split across three terms, however please note that there are no half term breaks. Additional work outside of the studio will also be needed for independent study, research and completion of projects. We also advise students that site visits or showroom trips may fall outside of regular studio hours.

Entry Requirements

  • A Degree (in any subject)

No previous art and design experience is required.

We can also accept applications from mature students who do not hold a degree but have sufficient prior learning experience. In this instance, the School will review any short courses, internships or work experience undertaken. Any non-degree holding students that are accepted onto this course will be required to complete and pass the KLC Preparatory course .

Entry onto the course is by interview only, so please complete the Request an Interview form or call our Admissions team to book your appointment.

To prepare for your interview, you will be asked to complete the following:

  • Interview forms, including education and career history
  • A creative exercise, including a written design rationale and visual room plan
  • A multiple choice spatial awareness test

Computer aided design is a key part of this course; therefore applicants must be computer literate and able to confidently use their personal laptop.

We are able to accept international applicants onto this course, subject to the following:

  • IELTS score of 6.5 (www.ielts.co.uk )
  • Successful application for a Tier 4 Visa
