Design Apprenticeship Program

The Design Apprenticeship Program brings together teens and professionals from across the D.C. metropolitan area to design and build full scale projects for the Museum and the city. The program is free, and lunch is provided.

What will I do?

  • Learn how to use the design process to make your ideas a reality
  • Receive training in how to use hand-held, power, and woodshop tools
  • Meet like-minded teens from across D.C. Maryland, and Virginia
  • Collaborate with professionals in architecture, construction, and design
  • Take field trips to Home Depot, Community Forklift, and neighboring communities

When is it?

The Design Apprenticeship Program meets Saturdays during the fall and spring of the school year from 10 am to 3 pm.

Fall 2016 Program Dates (new participants only):

Spring 2017 program (returning participants only) will be in March and April.

Who should apply?

Current middle and high school students, ages 13 18, who are:

  • committed to attending all program days, and
  • interested in learning about architecture, design, leadership, or engineering, or how to be more involved in their community.

Online applications for fall 2016 are available as of August 23. The deadline is September 6 and notifications will go out on September 16.
