Asian Interiors Symposium

Held on 2 December 2010, the Asian Interiors Symposium featured speakers from all across Asia discussing the Identity, Value, Relevance and Responsibility of interior design. This symposium was part of an international project called the Global Interiors Think Tank, initiated by the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers that sought to bring together leaders in the profession in an open dialogue focusing on important issues that surface from local, regional and national constituencies and bringing them into the global arena. These conversations are designed to create a broader and deeper understanding of the field and practice of Interior Architecture/Design by exploring topical and relevant aspects of the discipline worldwide, and bring about improvements in the interiors profession as well as changes in governmental and educational policies.

Under the Global Interiors Think Tank, each member association of the IFI was charged with forming its own discussion group consisting of prominent designers, educators, government officials and other stakeholders to discuss a fixed series of around 20 questions set out by the IFI on interior design Identity, Value, Relevance and Responsibility. These member associations then join other countries and territories in the region to take the dialogue further, and eventually all IFI members will meet in New York in February 2011 to take part in a Global Interior Design Symposium. Finally the conclusions from these discussions will be published as a white paper that will help facilitate policy changes for the profession around the world.

The Hong Kong Interior Design Association was proud to be the regional organizer of the Asian Interiors Symposium. Six speakers from across Asia including China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia and Hong Kong converged at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre during the Inno Design Tech Expo 2010. This meaningful event was organized by the Hong Kong Interior Design Association, funded by DesignSmart Initiative and sponsored by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.

    Living Room Layouts and Ideas

Fenimore believes adding a built-in bar, bookcases, shelving or even a workspace that are similar in style to your furniture can pull the look of a long living room together. Make sure to take note of doors, heaters, outlets and windows before you plan your layout the location of these items can limit furniture placement and be problematic if not considered before final floor plan decisions are made.

What you want to avoid is a long living room that feels like a hallway, says designer Marysia Rybock of ScavulloDesign Interiors. Using narrow furniture will just emphasize the long lines of the room. Go for a sofa with a tailored feel and tight upholstery.

“Using smaller pieces and a variety of them, instead of one sofa and a coffee table, helps the space feel more spacious and unique,” says Rybock.

    Open Living Rooms

Open living rooms allow for easy entertaining and good traffic flow. But a living room that shares space with an adjoining dining room, family room or kitchen can present challenges for those who want some type of definition for each area.

To create an efficient layout for an open living room, keep the flow around furniture and accessories open so your family and friends can be doing numerous things at once while still being together.

A dark brown gray living room with fireplace, tv, couches, large ottoman, and fluffy rug and a kitchen to match the style in the background.

“Go for vignettes instead of two sofas flanking a fireplace,” says Rybock. “Creating different seating areas makes the space feel a bit more intimate, since open floor plans can be overwhelming.”

Thinking about the function of the room will help you make smart layout decisions. An open living room often serves as a hub in the house, so make sure any floor plan includes comfortable spots for everyday activities like watching TV, eating or socializing.

“Pulling furniture pieces off the wall and tying them all together with an area rug, balancing with ottomans and adding extra seating will visually balance out the room,” says Fenimore. “Stick with one main paint color so the open spaces do not fight each other, which can cause the room to look cluttered.”

    Square Living Rooms

Adding warmth and creating an inviting atmosphere can be a challenge for square living rooms. When all of your furniture is pushed up against the wall, which leaves seating far away from each other, you can make the space feel cold. But you can also make your square living room feel crowded or awkward if all the furniture is forced into one corner. Instead, float furniture away from the walls.

“You can gain more surface space by having a console table behind a sofa and a variety of seating, like one sofa and four chairs that are not all the same that can float in a room and even be moved around,” says Rybock, “and then use a cocktail table as the anchor in the center of the space.” Once you have the furniture in place, Fenimore suggests using textural or colorful artwork to visually fill the room.

My wife and I were tired of our outdated, cluttered and boring living room. We are fortunate to have hired Michelle Ku of Addison Design to guide us through every step of transforming the room into a beautiful, comfortable area where we enjoy entertaining and relaxing. Michelle made the daunting tasks of selecting new furniture, window treatments, fabrics and paint colors simple and fun. I especially appreciate her ability to coordinate the logistics of our project; tasks like ordering furniture and locating reputable contractors were made much easier. I would highly recommend Addison Design to anyone looking to revitalize their living space.

    Laura Brandon L (StreetSong)

First and foremost, Michelle brings a lot of passion and focus to interior design. Michelle is one of the most resourceful designers I have met to date; she likes to dig in and find truly unique solutions to problems as well as discover the little known or out of the way suppliers who offer more than the run-of-the-mill. In school, I always liked having Michelle on my team or involved in a design jury. Her feedback is professional and courteous, and she is not afraid to ask the pertinent questions. Michelle also likes receiving feedback and questions about her work – she appreciates getting insights into possibilities she has not considered. Michelle likes to get things done and is quick to remove obstacles – she manages her work well. Creatively, I think Michelle produces some of the most beautiful and professional renderings I’ve seen. Michelle would be an excellent and productive addition to any design team and an interior design professional you can count on.
